#MikeAtSea Preview: Making A Difference With Fathom

Since Fathom was officially unveiled last year, I’ve been curious to discover what will set this cruise experience apart from all the others. After 22 cruises, to some extent, the experience has become a little predictable. Fathom is looking to change that for the better.
A Little Background
Fathom seeks to shake up the traditional cruise experience. Fathom’s “Social Impact Cruising,” is all about giving back to those in need, impacting the world one person at a time. Initially, the line’s sole ship, Adonia, will bring guests to the Dominican Republic and Cuba, where they’ll have numerous opportunities to participate in activities designed to “impact” the local community. These activities range from teaching local schoolchildren conversational English, playing a game of pick up baseball with local teenagers, or building water filters for families in need of clean water. The Fathom experience is truly unlike any out there. Fathom asks travelers to take their hard earned vacation time to give back to the world, to improve the lives of others, to make an impact.
Where I’ll Go

On April 17, the Adonia will set sail from Miami and begin sailing towards Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic, where we’ll remaining docked for four days, ensuring plenty of time to go out into the local communities and participate in the impact activities. The Adonia will also spend two days at sea, during which all of us onboard will spend time in immersive sessions designed to educate us about the local history, culture, and language.
