Following the success of Viking River Cruises, a new cruise line was born this evening with the advent of Viking Ocean Cruises, and with it comes the reveal of the line’s first ship, the Viking Star (rendered above). Launching in 2015, the new endeavor offers quite the value proposition and looks to create a new category in the cruise industry.

This is awesome news! Anything new to cruising is a good thing! What a great opportunity for Viking to come in and take what they know already about river cruising and extend it to ocean cruising. And that infinity pool is just too amazing for words!
Well said, Marian! Thanks for your comment!

I really really like it, but I really just don’t love it. I was waiting a while for the pictures of this ship to be released and it feels just a bit… Lackluster. I was really expecting they would take a cruise ship and make it a mid size ship, where it seems like the took a river boat and made it a mid size ship. The inside seems nice, the atrium, the explorers lounge, its just not as focused as I thought it would be. It all seems a bit blah… Which I suppose Is how a port intensive cruise should be, but Even then the inside looks more like a standard hotel, rather than a cruise ship of today’s standards. And I’m not knocking it for size because plenty of ships in this range do well, for example regent. When I compare those two lines of similar sizes with all balconies, regent seems more spacious with more spaces. I’m sure the prices will differ, but I really hope small shop cruising comes back a bit!
