Great news for solo travellers: boutique sailing line Star Clippers is waiving its single-supplement rate for guests who book a sailing to the Eastern and Western Mediterranean or Indonesia between April and October of this year.
In the Mediterranean, the company’s flagship, Royal Clipper, sails to popular ports of call in Corsica, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Malta. She is joined by the smaller, but no less pretty Star Flyer, which primarily makes her home in the Eastern Mediterranean, sailing weeklong roundtrip voyages from Athens (Piraeus), Greece; and Venice, Italy.
The real draw of Royal Clipper and her fleetmates is their unique styling. These are sailing ships through and through, and although they have auxiliary diesel engines to allow them to maintain their itineraries, Star Clippers have placed great emphasis on designing itineraries that allow the ship’s beautiful sails to be used as much as possible.
I sailed aboard Royal Clipper a few years ago in the Caribbean, and found her to be a lovely vessel filled with ornate wood panelling, nautical details like polished brass and elegant light sconces, and a welcoming sense of Gemütlichkeit – the German word for “coziness.” That may be appropriate, too: Star Clippers attracts a decidedly international clientele,
